BILOXI, Miss (WLOX) – This is your chance to take a look behind the curtain, kind of what a police department does on a daily basis. Coming in 2022, the Biloxi Police Department will hold its Citizens’ Academy.

“A lot of ordinary citizens don’t realize what it takes to do our jobs,” said Captain Thomas Goldsworthy. “They think it’s just a policeman coming out and taking calls.”

This is a series of 10 week courses that take place every Tuesday starting January 4th. The timeline covers all aspects of what makes a police service work.

Traffic service is a topic and something, according to patroller Tri Nguyen, is essential to keep the roads safe.

“Traffic not only reduces the number of accidents we have, but also the number of fatalities. We have had, I believe, 14 deaths this year, ”said Nguyen.

Investigations are also another unit where curious minds and detectives are welcome.

“You have to dig into a person’s background,” said Sgt. Larry Barnum. “This goes for witnesses, victims, suspects.”

Or maybe you are in the merger department, which works with information management and dissemination.

“We are working to integrate and improve police services by introducing these crime camera videos,” said Captain Louis Moran. “We are really trying to be a value added service for these investigators in order to save them time where we can take some of this work product. “
