Forty-four more deaths were reported at the Alaska Department of Health and Human Services ECHO meeting today and on the state’s data dashboard. The new number of cases for the day shows 1,740 more cases of Covid.

The process of reporting deaths can take some time, so many of these cases are pending deaths that have just been registered after going through the vast maze of agency verification. The state now says 514 deaths in Alaska can be attributed to Covid.

In today’s report, there are three deaths of non-residents and 41 deaths of residents of Alaska; again, from a mix of timing.

“Cases continue to increase in Alaska and are nine times the national level,” said Dr. Anne Zink, Alaska’s chief medical officer. “The case rate in Alaska is the highest in the country.”

“This is the highest incidence in cases that we have ever seen,” Zink said. “We need to add layers of protection. Vaccination is the key. Anyone 12 and older who has not received a covid vaccine should get one immediately, she said. People are eight times less likely to be hospitalized with Covid if they’ve been vaccinated.

This story is being updated.

The backlog describes cases that are not published the next day. As the state tries to increase staff, the workload has not been updated. Most of the 1,740 new cases date back to last week, but others go further back.

DHSS says the cyberattack on the ministry’s website earlier this year may have contributed to the delay in notification, but staffing is also a contributing issue.
