Marina Ovsyannikova, the Russian journalist who appeared on an evening newscast on Russian state television with a poster denouncing the war, has joined the German daily Die Welt as a freelance correspondent.

Axel Springer SE, the German conglomerate that owns Die Welt, said on Monday Ms Ovsyannikova would report for the media brand, including from Ukraine and Russia, writing for the newspaper and contributing to television coverage.

Ms Ovsyannikova confirmed later on Monday that she would be working for Die Welt from Moscow, but said she would not accept payment from the outlet for her work to avoid being branded a ‘foreign agent’ by the Russian authorities.

“Unfortunately, I participated in the creation of Kremlin propaganda for so many years that now I want to do everything to break it. And stop the war,” she said in an interview. “When people are dying, money is absolutely not important; the moral aspects become more important.

Last month, Ms. Ovsyannikova walked on the set of an evening newscast on Russia’s flagship state television channel, Channel One, holding a poster saying, “No war. Stop the war. Don’t believe the propaganda. They lie to you here. Russians against the war. She shouted, “Stop the war, no to the war” before the camera cut.

She was then handed over to the police. Ms Ovsyannikova was released and fined around $280 by a Moscow court over a video she posted explaining her actions.
