Sunday morning, hours after a Louisiana State Police soldier was found dead in his vehicle during a day-long manhunt for the suspect in that shooting and others on Saturday night, Governor John Bel Edwards and other heads of state mourned the loss of a former public servant.
Master Trooper Adam Gaubert, a 19-year veteran of the Louisiana State Police, had joined the force after serving in the United States Army.
“Private Gaubert embodied everything we stand for: honor, duty, selfless service and courage,” state police said in a statement. “In the days to come, we will mourn his tragic death and honor his service to our department and the citizens of Louisiana.”

Gaubert was found dead inside his vehicle around 6 p.m. Saturday – about a mile from the scene of a pre-dawn double shootout at a Prairieville home. State Police launched a massive manhunt in several parishes for Mire after shooting another soldier around 5 a.m. on Saturday in the southeast corner of East Baton Rouge parish.
Officials have not disclosed an exact timeline of events, including whether they believe Gaubert was killed before this 5 a.m. confrontation, which resulted from an attempted stop traffic. Mire was finally taken into custody around 11 p.m. in a wooded area near Bayou Manchac off Hoo Shoo Too Road.

Officials declined to say whether Gaubert responded to the double night shooting in Prairieville, or if he was simply in the area when the alleged ambush took place.
“Law enforcement has lost one of the biggest in a senseless act of violence,” wrote Saint-Amant fire chief James LeBlanc in a Facebook post on Sunday morning, saying the service had often the pleasure of working with Gaubert.

Gaubert joined the military after graduating from high school, then became a state soldier in 2002. He patrolled the Gonzales area.
In 2008, he was honored by the Knights of Columbus in Gonzales at a law enforcement appreciation event, when a supervising police officer praised Gaubert for his attention to detail and determination to investigate even the simplest road checks.
Responding to a recent traffic accident, the supervisor said, Gaubert had found drugs and used that evidence to gain information about a large-scale meth smuggling operation that resulted in arrests in three states.
Governor John Bel Edwards said in a statement Sunday morning that Gaubert “has served selflessly and courageously to keep our people and communities safe, and he represents the best of us all.”
