By Benjamin Fleurs: Just before the New Year, the Jamaican Police Force (JCF) rolled out its new Smart Check electronic ticketing system for traffic violations, reports the Jamaica Observer.

The system, which is being rolled out in phases, saw its first phase launched on Thursday, December 30 with 20 devices and around 100 more to roll out in a month.

The system aims to increase speed and efficiency when issuing tickets, with information about the offense, fine, court date and other important details being printed on the spot.

JCF’s Chief Information and Communication Technology (ICTD) Division Deputy Superintendent Orette Bascoe said the system would continuously benefit from added functionality and officers would be continually trained as capacity to use the system would evolve.

“Officers love the system, it is more readable, efficient and the information is entered directly into the traffic management system,” said DSP Bascoe. “It also gives the motorist the possibility of paying on the spot because the ticket can be sent to them by e-mail with a link to the payment portal.”

With the upsurge in state of emergency violations, Belize could benefit from such a system, as officers still write tickets manually.
