HEWITT, Texas – In the state of Texas, there are nearly 50,000 cases of missing persons.

Hewitt Police Chief Jim Devlin explained how local legal agencies work to help reunite their families.

“A runaway is considered a missing person in the state of Texas the way we entered it, so several thousand of these cases could happen in a year,” Devlin said.

The Hewitt Police Department works closely with larger law enforcement agencies when they are alerted to a missing child in the area.

“We have to know who we can get in touch with, who we can go to from the specialized equipment that we would need for a long time,” Devlin said.

Devlin says that when it comes to a missing person, the first question is, did someone abduct the person or go astray? He says the approach will always be the same on how they handle it.

“When we start looking for a search area, you know, although the incident command system takes over, and basically we start with the incident commander and build the plan,” says Devlin.

Local agencies – such as law enforcement, the Texas Department of Safety, and search and rescue – are launching a plan of operation.

“We start by getting the helicopter from DPS, using the overnight flight system that picks up the heat signatures, [and get a] Team K-9, ”says Devlin.
