Man killed by law enforcement near McCammon after chase

The following is a press release from Bannock County.

The Southeast Idaho Critical Incident Team is investigating an incident involving gunfire near McCammon in Bannock County.

The incident began around 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, October 13, 2021. Bannock County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to assist in a lawsuit that began in Caribou County.

The deputies were informed that the driver of a small white pick-up had fired several shots at the police.

Law enforcement from several local agencies followed the suspect vehicle westbound on Highway 30 through Lava Hot Springs, attempting to safely stop the pursuit with spikes; however, the suspect continued to drive. The suspect vehicle came to a stop around 3:50 p.m. on Highway 30, near the McCammon exit of Interstate 15.

After a fatal threat from the suspect, the police were forced to fire their weapons. The suspect was declared dead on the spot. The officers involved were not physically injured. In addition to Bannock County MPs, MPs from the Caribou County Sheriff’s Office, Idaho State Police Soldiers and Soda Springs Police officers also responded to the incident.

Currently, both directions of Highway 30 are blocked at McCammon as the investigation continues. There is no permanent threat to the community.

This situation continues to develop. Further information will be released as the investigation permits.
