MARION, SC – The Marion County Legislative Delegation has helped law enforcement officers meet their equipment needs with some funding.

Rep. Lucas Atkinson and Senator Kent Williams presented a check for $300,000 to purchase portable radios for the Marion County Sheriff’s Office, Marion Police Department, Mullins Police Department, Police Department of Nichols and the salesman’s police.

Atkinson said it would also save the county and municipalities money by not having to go out and buy those radios.

“I would like to thank Sheriff Brian Wallace for contacting me and asking to help secure funds so that our law enforcement agencies have what they need to protect the citizens of Marion County,” Atkinson said. “I would also like to thank Speaker Murrell Smith, Representative Phillip Lowe and Representative Jackie Hayes for ensuring our rural law enforcement agencies have the resources they need to keep our citizens safe. .”

Atkinson said he was contacted by Marion County Sheriff Brian Wallace about the need to upgrade the radio system.

“He did a good job contacting all the police departments and finding out their needs and getting the ball rolling,” he said. “They need the radios because if they didn’t have them they wouldn’t have any communication outside of their patrol cars.”

Senator Williams said he was grateful to Rep. Atkinson for working to secure the funding.

“It says a lot about him being able to work with leaders to help county law enforcement upgrade their radios so they can have the best communications,” Williams said. “We want to make sure we equip our law enforcement with the necessary tools they need to keep the public safe here in the county and them too.”

Wallace said when he approached Rep. Atkinson with the project, he wanted to include all local law enforcement.

“Our radios that we currently have are at the end of their life and will not be usable in the near future,” he said. “It’s just one step and for any project we try to include our departments. We are a rural county and we all work together.
