A chaotic scene ensued Saturday morning at a Walmart in the southern suburb of Olympia Fields when a retail theft suspect fired a shot during a fight with a security guard inside the store, authorities said.

At around 9:42 a.m., officers responded to Walmart regarding the shootings and located an employee who had been injured, according to Olympia Fields Police Chief Derrick Blasingame. The employee, a security guard, was taken to Franciscan Health Olympia Fields Hospital where she was treated for a head injury and later released.

While it’s not immediately clear what led to the incident, police say a struggle ensued between the security guard and several retail theft suspects, and at one point, one of the individuals fired a shot. Once at the hospital, the doctors determined that the employee had not been shot, but that she had probably suffered a head injury when she fell during the struggle.

Police continued to search for the suspects on Saturday afternoon, but stressed the incident was isolated and there was no continuing threat to the community.

Walmart released the following statement following the incident:

“We are deeply troubled by today’s incident and are grateful that the associate involved did not sustain any injuries. We will continue to work closely with law enforcement as they investigate and hopefully the suspect will be quickly apprehended and brought to justice.”
