NEW HARMONY, Indiana (WEHT) – Bullet holes and boarded up windows are now reminiscent of the chaotic scenes that unfolded in a quiet New Harmony neighborhood on Saturday night.

According to police, what started as a welfare check on Short St. quickly escalated after a suspect, later identified as the former Marshal of New Harmony Town and reserve deputy Paul Wiltshire, started shooting at the police. Posey County Sheriff Tom Latham called the incident which left MP Bryan Hicks with serious injuries and Wiltshire also injured “the unthinkable”.

Neighbor Joni Mayhan watched the shooting unfold from her own backyard, saying she heard at least 60 gunshots in 20 minutes. Mayhan says seeing Deputy Hicks and his fellow officers trying to get him off the street “hard to watch.”

In a touching press conference on Saturday afternoon, Sheriff Latham called on the community to pray for MP Hicks and his family, stressing that his department would try to “make this situation as fair as possible”.

A day later, Mayhan says it is still difficult to look at the house, thinking of the “lives that have just been destroyed in 20 minutes”. Mayhan says her neighborhood is generally very peaceful, saying “you never think something like this will happen, until it does”.

Mayhan urges others to keep an eye on their loved ones and keep them close, noting “you don’t want this to happen, but sometimes life does.”
