Azerbaijani forces have recently escalated hostilities against Armenia, sending its army into internationally recognized Armenian territory and causing dozens of casualties.
US Senators Marco Rubio (R-FL) and Bob Menendez (D-NJ) presented a bipartisan resolution condemning Azerbaijan’s illegal and unprovoked assault on Armenian territory and calling on the United States to immediately cease all security assistance to Azerbaijan.
The resolution calls on President Joe Biden to make a formal decision on whether Azerbaijani officials should face sanctions under the Magnitsky Global Human Rights Accountability Act. The effort also calls on the U.S. State Department to meet all reporting requirements for the review of U.S. assistance to Azerbaijan following the recent Government Accountability Office (GAO) report, which found that the government continued to make exceptions to circumvent a 1992 law banning most of the United States. military assistance to Azerbaijan without mandatory reporting and justification requirements.
