What Union Station looks like with increased security

DENVER (KDVR) – More than 3 million people in eight counties use RTD trains and buses, and many are expected to head downtown for holiday events in the coming days.

RTD said FOX31 passengers can enjoy a safe and convenient service as they use the transit option to avoid parking issues.

The popular Union Station stop received a clean-up effort that improved conditions near the adjacent pavilion. On December 1, FOX31 Problem Solvers found episodes of open drug use, trash, and disruption near the shutdown. The Amalgamated Transit Union, which represents more than 2,000 RTD workers, called for change.

“We are here to do our job. We are not there to necessarily tell them how to fix it, but they have to understand it, ”said Union President Lance Longenbohn.

RTD told FOX31 that the combined efforts are working to provide a safer environment.

“RTD has worked closely with many law enforcement agencies, the TSA, the [TSA] The VIPR team, the Guardian Angels and the Denver Police Department to ensure that the area around Denver Union Station is monitored so that it provides a safe environment for people traveling to downtown to enjoy holiday activities, ”RTD spokeswoman Marta Sipeki said.

FOX31 saw a marked improvement with clean aisles, no lounging around and a strong security presence.

The RTD workers union provided FOX31 with a statement saying:

“ATU 1001 appreciates Mayor Hancock’s immediate response to the concerns we have raised. The increased police presence at Union Station in Denver is having an effect, but there is still a lot of work to be done. After meeting with the mayor on December 15th, we are convinced that there is a commitment to do this work.

A biker tells FOX31 that the area is “just a lot nicer to get around”.

Riders should keep in mind that masks are mandatory on RTD property until March 18. The Auraria West stop is closed during Broncos games (see the RDT site for the delay).
