KENOSHA – False reports of an active shooter on Monday afternoon at Carthage College prompted a major police intervention in the area, but were quickly ruled to be false.

Kenosha County Sheriff’s Department MPs and town police have been implicated in a foot chase of a suspect who fled from a traffic stop Monday morning near Alford Park and the campus of the Carthage College, and it appeared to spawn unfounded SMS warnings from a potential gunman on campus.

Police quickly dispelled false rumors, but conducted a search of the buildings and grounds of the Carthage campus out of “excess of caution,” Kenosha Acting Police Chief Eric Larsen told the Kenosha News on places.

According to police radio traffic and information at the scene, the students shared text messages indicating that there was an active gunman on campus, with at least one student warning people in a building that there was a shooter in the area. This prompted 911 to call the police. But none of the callers reported hearing shots or seeing a gun, only that they heard someone say someone fired.

Carthage spokesperson Traci Parker said the college was informed by law enforcement about the search for a suspect near campus on Monday morning.

“After the suspect was arrested, a call was made to the Kenosha Police Department by someone inside the Straz Science Center stating that they believed there was an active shooter, giving police a location specific to the interior of the building, ”Parker said in an email. “During a debriefing with officials in Carthage, the Kenosha Police Department said it responded to the call, isolated the area of concern, cleaned up the building and carried out a thorough search of the area. They found no evidence of an active shooter present or having been present on campus. It was determined that there had never been a threat to the Carthage campus.
